diy homemade lotion

I have wanted to find a great homemade lotion recipe for years. Our skin is our largest organ, and what we put on it matters - especially something as frequently used as lotion. We live in Minnesota, so lotion is a staple for us, especially in the cold and dry winter months (which is like 6 months out of the year, haha!). That’s why I’m so excited to share about the Simply Earth DIY Lotion Kit from their January subscription box. It’s one of my favorite kits for anyone looking to take a hands-on approach to clean beauty, and learning the process of making your own lotion is such a valuable skill as you grow in your homemaking of beauty products!

Here's Why I Love it:

The Simply Earth DIY Lotion Kit makes learning how to make lotion simple, fun, and incredibly rewarding. With everything you need included, this kit is perfect for beginners and seasoned DIYers alike.

Here’s why I'm hooked:

  • High-Quality Ingredients: The kit includes clean, skin-nourishing ingredients like emulsifying wax, sunflower oil, and essential oils for fragrance. You can trust what’s going on your skin! *I recognize sunflower oil is a controversial choice for skincare. In this recipe, you could sub out jojoba or almond oil!

  • All-In-One Convenience: From the tools to the ingredients, the kit comes with everything you need. No more hunting down specialty items—you’ll have it all ready to go.

  • Easy to Follow: The instructions are straightforward, making it perfect for busy moms (like me!) who want to create something special without a lot of fuss.

  • Customizable: You can personalize your lotion with your favorite essential oils to make it truly your own.

If you’ve ever felt intimidated by making your own lotion, this kit removes the guesswork. Plus, you’ll gain a skill that can save you money while helping you avoid toxins in conventional products.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Melt the Wax and Oil:

    • Combine the emulsifying wax and jojoba oil in a heat-safe container. If you’re using cetyl alcohol, you can add it here!

    • Place the container in a double boiler and gently heat until the wax is fully melted.

  2. Warm the Water:

    • In a separate container, warm the distilled water to approximately the same temperature as the melted wax and oil mixture (around 150°F).

  3. Blend the Mixtures:

    • Slowly pour the warm water into the melted wax and oil mixture while blending with an immersion blender.

    • Blend on low speed until the mixture starts to thicken and form a creamy consistency.

  4. Add the Essential Oils and Preservative:

    • Allow the mixture to cool slightly (to about 120°F), then add the lavender essential oil and vanilla oleoresin (or peppermint essential oil).

    • If using a preservative, add it now according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Stir gently to combine.

  5. Transfer and Cool:

    • Pour the lotion into clean, sterilized containers (like amber glass pump bottles).

    • Let the lotion cool completely before sealing the containers.

Storage Tips:

  • Store in a cool, dry place.

  • If you don’t use a preservative, refrigerate your lotion and use it within 2-3 weeks to ensure freshness.
